Reading Support at St. Monica Parish School
Throughout each school year, the reading specialist interacts with kindergarten through fifth grade students in a variety of ways. These include:
1) Providing small group experiences where students complete the same activities that the class is doing, but in a smaller setting. This reduces class size, provides more “turns” for each student to read or answer questions orally, and offers opportunities for individual instruction.
2) Structuring extra time for individuals to complete tasks. Some students need a less stimulating environment in which to complete certain reading or writing assignments. Others may need extra assistance in organizing materials or thoughts, understanding directions or staying on task or topic.
3) Working with small groups as part of enrichment/extended learning beyond the regular curriculum.
4) Meeting with particular classes or groups for a series of lessons or activities aimed at accomplishing a specific task or goal- for instance, improving reading fluency or preparing for a class debate.
