Dear St. Monica Parish School Families,
Thanks to all who have been supporting the Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser! Friday, February 17th is the final day to turn in all packets and money donations. These may be turned in at the school office, to classroom homeroom teachers, or directly to Miss Bocian. Please see the message below for more details.  Our students have been making their own hearts healthier by jumping rope at recess, in PE classes, and at home. Thanks for supporting such a worthy cause!

St. Monica Parish School is sponsoring our annual Scholastic Book Fair March 2 - 9!  Giving students access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. Like most acquired skills, the more children practice reading, the better they'll get. Please support our book fair and help raise funds for new titles for our library collection!

Please remember that the deadline for turning in your 2012-2013 registration is  tomorrow, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16th!

News of Note:

  • Congratulations Speech Team!: Our St. Monica Parish School Speech Team competed in the Eastside Catholic Speech Tournament last Saturday. Every participant received outstanding scores. Winning Superior Awards were: Sam Johnson in Sr. Oratory, Brynne Weed in Sr. Dramatic Interp. and Sr. Ed. Com, Mary Margaret Hubert in Sr. Dramatic Interp., and Madeleine Smallwood in Jr. Children's Storybook.  Congratulations to all of our participants. We are very proud of the way you represent our school. Special thanks to Mrs. Baron for the great job she does coaching and guiding our students!
  • FREE DRESS DAY:  Friday, February 17th. This is the last Friday of the month of February when we are in school so it is a FREE DRESS day! Please make sure that students have a uniform sweatshirt to wear to the 9 am Mass.
  • Called to Protect for Parents & Families:  Each year we are required to inform our parish and school community about the availability of the Safe Environment class entitled Called to Protect for Parents & Families.  If interested, the next available class is scheduled for March 31, 2012 at 10 am at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. This class provides basic information regarding Safe Environment expectations in the Archdiocese of Seattle, but does not fulfill the requirement for the Called to Protect for Ministries class that must be taken in order to volunteer in our community.
  • School Registration Deadline for 2012-2013: Please note that the deadline for returning your completed registration information is Thursday, February 16th. It is crucial that you return this information on time so that we will know how many families will be enrolled for next year. We do have some students on our waitlists!
  • Tuition Assistance for the 2012-2013 School Year: The tuition assistance application form for the 2012-2013 school year is now available on the Fulcrum Foundation website. The deadline for submitting your application is February 17, 2012. Please access www.fulcrumfoundation.org and complete the application online. Please also submit a hard copy to the school office by the deadline. St. Monica Parish School disburses tuition awards from our own school funds, however, we do require that applicants use the Fulcrum Foundation forms and process to apply. Should your family require financial assistance, please do not miss this important deadline. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
  • Jump Rope for Heart: Thanks to all participating in the JRFH fundraiser. So far we are more than one third of the way towards our $3000 goal. Please remember that the donation packets must be completely filled out before turning them in. Also, please make sure you include both checks and online donation information. You may return the packets to the school office, homeroom teacher, or Miss Bocian. You may contact her with questions: sbocian@stmonicasea.org There are great incentives which include...top class ice cream party...top fundraiser rewards...and much more....Miss Bocain will announce the top prize winners and total raised after the mid-winter break. Please note that all "thank you gifts" from the American Heart Association will be sent 4-6 weeks after the donations are received. • Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair is coming in two weeks! The fair will run from March 2-9. Students will visit the fair during their scheduled library times during the school day and are encouraged to come with their parents after school. The book fair will be open in the library every day after school from 3-4 pm except on March 5th. VOLUNTEERS are needed!! Please use the online sign up on SchoolSpeak or contact Mrs. Zipp to volunteer. jzipp@stmonicasea.org
  • Peter J. Feldsine Scholarship Winner: We are pleased to announce that the annual Peter J. Feldsine $2,000 scholarship has been awarded to one of our middle school students  for the 2011-2012 school year. This scholarship was established by his family as a lasting memory to Peter who was a 2004 graduate of our school. Peter died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 2010. This scholarship is intended to help a student in need achieve the quality of education that was afforded to Peter at St. Monica Parish School. Qualifying students submit an essay describing the benefits that they will receive from a quality Catholic education and how they feel this education will help them develop a sense of social consciousness. (Because the selection is based partly upon financial need, the recipient's name is confidential.)  Thank you to the Feldsine Foundation for this generous opportunity and a chance for us to remember Peter J. Feldsine who was a much a beloved student in our community!
  • Lenten Look Ahead:  Since Ash Wednesday falls during the school mid-winter break there will not be a school Mass. Please note that the Ash Wednesday Masses are 6:05 am, 8:00 am, and 7:00 pm with Distribution of Ashes. There will also be a 5:00 pm Liturgy of the Word with Distribution of Ashes and all are welcome.
