Pre-K Curriculum 2011-2012

Thank you for taking an interest in the St. Monica Parish School Pre-Kindergarten. Please also take a look at the daily schedule, and the developmental portfolio program we use.

Small Groups
Students will be divided into small groups for individualized daily instruction based on their academic abilities in reading, writing, and math. These will be teacher directed activities and are designed to be an informal assessment, and to give students a chance to build on skills they already have.

Handwriting Without Tears
St. Monica Parish School uses the Handwriting Without Tears program, and the Pre-K class is no exception. Each child will work in their workbooks, completing the activities that have been designed to help kids develop good handwriting skills, and letter recognition.

Units of Study
Students will be working on social skills, reading, writing, math, science, and creative expression all within a themed unit of study. In early childhood education it is important for children to be interested in what they are learning in order to keep them engaged. This is why we will be changing the theme, and activities monthly all while continuing our work on academic, Christian values, responsibility and social skills.

The Full Day Difference
Please look at the sample full day schedule. The second part of the day provides P.E. in the school gym, another center time for the students to explore their classroom environment and socialize with peers, and concentrates on science, math, and writing.  The full day option also gives us time for music and movement so we can follow the beat, and exercise our gross motor muscles. Kindergarten readiness groups are designed for those who will be attending kindergarten the following year. It allows them to keep working on their readiness skills such as letter recognition, letter sounds, blending sounds, fine motor control, and early math skills all while having fun.
