RELIGION: Faith First is a series by RCL Publications. This is a text that illustrates the delight with which we acknowledge our uniqueness as individuals gifted by our loving and gracious God. We learn to be accepting of others and treat each person with dignity and respect. We will celebrate how God’s love creates our universe, makes us who we are, gives us people to love, gives us Jesus to love and gives us the ability to love ourselves. EVERYDAY MATH: This program enables the children to deal with mathematical concepts through manipulation and games. This allows students to later connect them with abstract symbols. These activities are fun and the students enjoy their success. We will sort, classify, pattern, count forward by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We also explore number families by comparing, measuring, graphing, estimating and finding place value. SCIENCE: I use a variety of texts and resources to build my science curriculum. Some material comes from a program entitled FOSS Science Kits, which utilizes a variety of activities centered on Trees, the forest and its creatures, preservation and its resources. Other science curriculum focuses on the five senses, and a ladybug and rainforest unit. COMPUTERS: The computer lab is utilized to further familiarize students with a computer, its keyboard and mouse. We also have access to computers in the classroom that the children are allowed to use freely during Free Choice time. READING READINESS & LITERACY: I teach a Phonics and Literature-based program in my classroom centered on ZooPhonics, the Wright Group and the Houghton Mifflin Wonder of Words program. This includes all the elements of letter recognition in the alphabet, phonics, sight words, poems, movement, songs and immersion in many forms of children’s literature. Students also participate in Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops during the week. This combination of reading and writing strategies allows students to become proud, successful and confident readers and writers. HANDWRITING: Handwriting Without Tears is a program we use in kindergarten to build skills in letter formation. The goal of Handwriting Without Tears is to make legible and fluent handwriting an easy and automatic skill for all students. The curriculum uses multi-sensory techniques and consistent habits for letter formation to teach handwriting to all students. SPECIALISTS:
