Guatemala Connection
"I just wanted to let you know that we have received the contribution from St. Monica School of $300.00 to help purchase supplies for the school in El Yalu. In fact, we just took out a truckload of notebooks and teacher supplies to the village this morning to help them get ready for the opening of their school year in the next couple of weeks Please extend to all the St. Monica students our appreciation for their continued support of the students in that village. Below is a picture of several of the El Yalu students using supplies that St. Monica has helped purchase. Thought you might like to share it with your community. Take care and have a wonderful 2011 and Peace," St. Monica School has entered into a school-to-school partnership with a very poor and struggling school in Guatemala. We have been matched with La Escuela de San Jose El Yalu through the non-profit organization called Avivara. (In Spanish, Avivara means “to enliven, to give life to, or spur on.”) It is our hope that through this partnership our students will become more aware of the principles of the Social Justice Teachings of the Catholic Church and their application by learning about the realities of poverty in San Jose El Yalu. The school we will be helping needs simple school supplies, desks, tables, and running water, just to name a few of their many pressing needs. The families live in extreme poverty and they struggle to get a simple education for their children. It is our plan to connect through prayer, letter, and digital storytelling (video) in order to support and learn more about each other. Students will also do simple fundraising to help provide this school with some of their basic needs. CHRISTIAN ROLE MODELS WHO:
