St. Monica School has entered into a school-to-school partnership with a very poor and struggling school in Guatemala. We have been matched with La Escuela de San Jose El Yalu through the non-profit organization called Avivara. (In Spanish, Avivara means “to enliven, to give life to, or spur on.”)   It is our hope that through this partnership our students will become more aware of the principles of the Social Justice Teachings of the Catholic Church and their application by learning about the realities of poverty in San Jose El Yalu. The school we will be helping needs simple school supplies, desks, tables, and running water, just to name a few of their many pressing needs. The families live in extreme poverty and they struggle to get a simple education for their children. It is our plan to connect through prayer, letter, and digital storytelling (video) in order to support and learn more about each other. Students will also do simple fundraising to help provide this school with some of their basic needs.
