A Brief Summary of the Fourth Grade Curriculum
|
Religion – Religious education in the fourth grade is
centered around the benchmarks written by the Seattle Archdiocese
and St. Monica Parish School, Student Learning Expectations. The
religion curriculum is supported by Blest are We
textbook, Second Step, and Steps to Respect programs which
address teaching social skills.
Reading Writing – My writing program emphasizes writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. Students review the five steps in the writing process and become proficient in its use. This process includes prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. I also teach the Six Traits + 1 of writing: ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
Math
–
Multiplication, long division, fractions, measurement, geometry,
and problem solving are a few of the skills fourth grade focuses
on. The curriculum is supported by the use of the Houghton
Mifflin Math series and supplementary practice pages.
Science – The science curriculum is supported by the Harcourt Science textbook series and Foss kits. Students will learn by the fun hands-on activities and investigations. Some units include, human body, ecosystems, electricity, and space. Social Studies – The social studies curriculum is organized around Washington State. This includes the study of history, geography, economy, and culture of the state, as well as a study of the Northwest Coast Native American culture, Lewis and Clark, and U.S. Geography.
Communication
– Students are
responsible for two oral presentations each trimester. These
presentations take various forms. They are expected to do an oral
saint report, present their landform island, participate in the
Lewis and Clark musical, present a power point that they created,
and to tell a story at the Storytelling Festival. St. Monica School
also provides many other opportunities for the students to practice
their communication skills.
