What about Birthdays?

Everyone loves to celebrate their birthday with their friends, and children love to have their birthdays acknowledged at school.

We now have many children that have food allergies.  Since most children do have a “sweet” family celebration in the evening, second grade has been celebrating student birthdays in a different manner.

On your child’s birthday, the student chooses a book to wrap in birthday wrap and present to the class. (This can be a new or lightly used book of your choice.) The students writes their name and birth date in the front of the book. The child brings the wrapped book in the morning and it is placed on the front board tray until after lunch.  At that time the student comes forward, the class sings “Happy Birthday”, the birthday child opens the book and sits with the teacher while she reads the book (or part of it) to the class.

The children still feel special and all of the students get to enjoy your child’s book during quiet reading in the classroom.
