Have a wonderful summer vacation!

  Summer Fun

Ten weeks without school is a long time. Here are some ideas of some things the children would like to do this summer that would keep them learning.

Our class started playing USA bingo in May. It really became a favorite. Continue this interest this summer.

Get some USA map placemats for the table. When you read about something in the paper, find the state on the map. These will also be helpful in locating settings in books being read.

Keep a reading journal. List the books you’ve read and write a short report or summary.

Participate in one of the many summer reading programs in the area. King County library is just one of them.

Have your own summer reading club in your neighborhood or family.

Have a book talk meal at lunch or dinner where everyone tells about the book they’re reading.

Math facts! Yes, perhaps next year they will have to wear mittens during math. Have students earn summer spending money by improving the time or number of correct responses.

Story problems. Ask your child to solve real problems. Give them a $5.00 bill and ask them how much change they will get if they spend $2.39.

Determine how old a sports player, character in a book, or family member is by subtracting the person’s year of birth from 2007. Yes, they can do it!

Have your child write a report or newspaper story about a family outing.

Encourage your child to write to a pen pal or relative in another state.

Have your child keep a diary.
